2017 S.O.A.P. for HOPE Youth Film Contest & Festival

Welcome! We invite Ohio youth and young adults to express their creativity and help prevent human trafficking by participating in our 2017 S.O.A.P. for HOPE Youth Film Contest & Festival.

Youth and young adults ages 10-24 have the opportunity to create videos/films in English and/or Spanish, examining the topics of Labor or Sex Trafficking in the United States.

  • Videos and films MUST be 3-10 minutes in length.

OR

  • A Public Service Announcement (PSA) of 30, 60, or 90 seconds.

  • Video and film submissions may NOT contain nudity, profanity or violence.

Youth are encouraged to work with teachers, youth leaders, parents and/or other adults on this project. Ask your teachers if you may receive class-credit.

All entries MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 8PM ON MAY 31st, 2017, and selected entries will be shown at a free public screening in Columbus, Ohio. Finalists in each of the three age categories will be selected. CASH PRIZES & AWARDS for finalists are sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter - Ohio and additional sponsors. 

Professionals in the fields of education, human trafficking, visual art and video/film production are available by email to advise and/or mentor contestants, help with the project, and answer questions.   (See ADVISORS page)

ALL video and film submissions are the property of the Ohio Children's Trust Fund (OCTF).
Winning video and film submissions will be made available to Ohio schools, youth centers and organizations to serve as anti-human trafficking resource material for youth and young adults.

Eligibility

1. Contestants must reside in the state of Ohio.
2. Video or film submissions can be made in one of the following categories:

  • Youth, ages 10-14
  • Youth, ages 15-18
  • Young Adult, ages 19-24

3. For group entries, all contestants MUST fall together within the same age bracket.
4. Only ONE video or film submission may be made per group. Group members may NOT submit an additional video or film entry as an individual.

5. ALL Contestants submitting a video/film, containing or NOT containing photos, and ALL Participants and Contestants appearing in a video/film and photo(s) MUST give written consent. (HERE)
6. Video or film entries MUST be submitted by 8pm on MAY 31st, 2017, accompanied by ALL photograph and video release forms, and a completed questionnaire about each individual’s experience with the project.

Themes

We are looking for videos or films centered around Prevention, Education and/or Awareness of Human Trafficking in the United States. Please do NOT submit any videos about international trafficking.

Themes for video/film submissions may be: (examples)

  • Sex trafficking of youth in the U.S.
  • Domestic labor trafficking (restaurant workers, massage parlors, nail salons, braiding salons, housekeepers, migrant workers, etc.)
  • How to prevent trafficking of yourself, or of another person, or in your community
  • How traffickers target victims & how you and others can protect yourselves
  • Boys being trafficked
  • “If You See Something, Say Something.”
  • Ending abusive relationships that bear the signs of a person being sexually exploited or trafficked
  • Real abolitionists in the past or present

Format of Entries :

Format of video/film entries may be: (examples)

  • Short film with primarily youth cast
  • Short documentary or expository research piece
  • Public Service Announcement (PSA): 30, 60 or 90 seconds (See RESOURCES page)
  • Traditional, digital, or stop-motion animation
  • Photos put together with music and/or narration
  • A videotaped live performance such as a dance, song, speech, poem, etc.

Getting Started

IMPORTANT: Before you begin, please email soapforhopeyouthfilmfest@gmail.com with your name(s), age(s), and the name of your Youth or Young Adults organization/program, if applicable, to notify us that you intend to complete an anti-human trafficking video/film submission by 8 pm on May 31st, 2017 for the 2017 S.O.A.P. for HOPE Youth Film Contest & Festival. Click on "Yes I/We Intend..."  at the top right of this page.

This email serves as an agreement that you and/or your group are eligible for this video/film project and intend to fulfill all requirements according to contest and festival guidelines.

Remember: Please share information about human trafficking and prevention appropriately with others as you work on your video/film submissions.

Judging

A panel of judges, including human trafficking survivors, artists, educators, anti-human trafficking advocates from Ohio, and OCTF staff, will review the video/film submissions and determine the winning selections. Finalists will be contacted by email by June 9th, 2017.

Video or film submissions will be judged on the following qualities:

1. CONTENT: How clearly and effectively do you present your message about labor or sex trafficking? What will an audience understand and learn from your message?

  • Video and film submissions may NOT contain nudity, profanity or violence.

All video/film submissions MUST include the following information in some form:

- Call 911, if in immediate physical danger

2. CREATIVITY: Have you presented your message about labor or sex trafficking in an interesting and creative way?

3. FORMAT: Does your video/film and its message about labor or sex trafficking flow smoothly and clearly in your chosen format? Does the order of your information and/or scenes with people and places make sense?

  • Lighting, focus, clear audio/sound, acting, dialog, narration, etc. are important!

NOTE: Since Youth and Young Adults will have access to different forms of technology, CONTENT and CREATIVITY will receive greater attention by the judges. 

Film Festival

The FREE screening festival will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Gateway Film Center, 1550 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43201. 

Open House: FREE tickets are available in the theater lobby beginning at 1:00 pm on day of the youth film festival. Seating is limited.

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Selected video and film submissions that meet contest and festival requirements will be screened. FREE to public

5:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Awards Ceremony & Screening of Winning  Video and Film Submissions FREE to public

6:00 pm – 7:30 pm: Private Reception for Finalists and their families

Prizes, sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter - Ohio and additional sponsors, will be awarded for each of the three age brackets. Awards include: 1st Prize: $100, 2nd Prize: $75,
3rd Prize: $50, and Honorable Mention: $25.
